If you don’t or can’t run to the store to buy pizza sauce then you can make it from what you have. You can make your own pizza sauce from a jar of pasta sauce in 15 minutes or less.

Why Use Pasta Sauce on Pizza?

I’m sure you’re wondering why not use straight pasta sauce on your pizza.  You certainly could do that, but you’re going to end up with a messy pizza. Pasta sauce is very runny and thin, will end up everywhere, and sometimes makes the dough less than appetizing (soggy).  No one wants a soggy pizza!

What Pasta Sauce Should I Use?

Any pasta sauce can be used to make pizza sauce! The less chunky ones work a little better for a more traditional pizza sauce. Di Napoli Classico, Tomato, Herbs and Spices, is my favorite spaghetti sauce. How to Make Pizza Sauce

Step 1

First pour your pasta sauce (any amount) into an appropriate sized saucepan and heat to boiling on medium high, stirring constantly for about two minutes.  I recommend a pan with tall sides as the sauce has a tendency to bubble and try to jump out of the pan.

If you have a chunky sauce you may want to run it through a blender prior to adding it to the pot.

Step 2

Next reduce heat to medium or medium low and simmer until reduced by half or thick consistency.  The lower your temperature is, the longer it will take and the less stirring you will have to do. I’d say on low it will probably take around 20 minutes, medium heat around 15 minutes.

If you really want to speed up the process you could heat on medium high but be careful not to let your sauce burn. If you choose to do it on medium high you must stir constantly.   Another way to make this quicker is to add a tablespoonful of tomato paste.

Thick Pizza Sauce

Step 3

Once your sauce has reached a nice thick consistency that you are happy with you may either serve it on your pizza and enjoy or let cool and package it up into sealed bags for the freezer.

Now you know how to use pasta or spaghetti sauce for a wonderful thick Pizza Sauce!
